Crazy Days

Posted by Katy Wally

What day is it? Saturday, Right….it’s been that kind of week, which I hope excuses and slightly explains my absence since Wednesday. I won’t go into all the details, but I want to at least share with you the loveliness of the lunch I had on Thursday. (I got to meet Michelle Obama!!!).

When you meet someone like the first lady you don’t get to take your own pictures of your meeting — (I only got to take these with my camera phone of her speech during lunch) — only the white house official camera guy gets to take a picture, but supposedly they will be sending me a copy (which I can’t wait to share!!). I have to say, our first lady is stunning. Really, simply beautiful. I got all sta

You’ve seen the flyers around for Earth Day events in your community. Maybe your child has done an eco-related project at school over the last week. Why not consider making one change in your lifestyle that can help the environment?

  • Stop buying bottled water. Even with the bottles that can biodegrade, using a washable water bottle and the water from your water filter is a much more Earth-friendly option.
  • Recycle. Does your town require you to recycle plastic, glass and paper? What about your food scraps? You can always set up a second bin to hold your food scraps to use in the local compost heap.
  • Compost your yard. In lieu of chemical feeds, use compost to feed your garden and yard. You can make your own compost, or buy it.
  • Eat with reusable plates, silverware and cups. No more paper or Styrofoam for you. B

The Lexham Bedside Table

Posted by Katy Wally

Here is a bedside table made for the people requiring the extremes! This is a mesmerizing table called the Lexham bedside table, something that plays with an individual’s vision and understanding through tiered sections that are warping.

The legs were crafted using acute angles, rendering a forced perspective which should all the more capture the curiosity of onlookers. The table is made from Corian, a thermochromic liquid sheet which laser cut to size and shape. The inlay surface is also temperature sensitive meaning its colors responds to hot and cold temperature.

The Lexham Bedside Table was made by Studio801.

New Uses for Old Windows

Posted by Jim Parker

If you’re replacing your old windows with new energy-efficient ones, don’t throw them away!   You can donate them to architectural salvage yards or use them for new projects.  I’ve compiled a list of amazing things you can do with them that will add instant character to your home.

  • Dividers between interior rooms where a cut-out in the wall exists.  It’ll give you privacy in each space without blocking sunlight that normally passes through the rooms.  If you install hinges on the wall edge, you can open them when desired.
  • New glass door fronts for kitchen or bath cabinetry.  They look great all cleaned up!
  • A window in a faux ruin wall (like the one pictured above) which used left-over bricks to create a garden room.
  • A tabletop sitting atop 4 legs.  To give a finished look, add some trim between the legs just below the window tabletop.
  • A mini greenhouse!
  • Decorative screens when 3 old windows are hinged together.
  • A headboard or wall art.  You can paint something on the glass or attach a scenic print to the backside of the frame (with or without the glass).
