Europe’s phase-out of conventional incandescent and halogen bulbs unable to meet the new energy requirements began in September 2009 with the clear 100-watt incandescent. A year later the 75-watt was gone, and as of September 1st, the 60-watt incandescent faded away. Next fall the 40- and 25-watt will be history too. No frosted incandescent bulbs met the standard, and have already been withdrawn. The European Commission estimates that by 2020 the new standard will save enough energy to power 11 million homes a year, roughly the electricity used in Romania, and trim the average household’s electric bill by $34 annually.

The Gathering at Garst, billed as “a garden of antiques and art” took place July 30-31 on North Broadway Street in Greenville and boasted approximately 5,000 visitors. The first festival of what intends to become an annual event, it was held on the commons of the Garst Museum. The Gathering celebrated local heritage and promoted awareness and appreciation of people who make unique contributions to Darke County.

“The Gathering at Garst was an awesome opportunity to promote the Art at Bears Mill series,” said Ben Deeter, a ceramic artist from Pleasant Hill. “Our sales for the weekend exceeded our expectations. It was really great to see the community support, the weather was great and the food was outstanding. We definitely look forward to returning next year.”

Q:We planted some ‘Calico’ popcorn in our community garden in Hillsborough, and none of us are sure when to harvest the ears. We’d like to give them to our school-age volunteers to be popped in the microwave. Do we leave the ears on the stalk to dry or can we harvest them (before the bugs get them) and let them dry in our houses?

A: When popcorn is ready to harvest, the kernels will be hard and glossy. The husks and, for that matter, the rest of the plant, will be brown and dry. Only then should you remove the ears from the stalks.
